Aram Soli Rudenski won an open scholarship to Clare College, Cambridge, graduating with a triple first in the mathematics and medical sciences Triposes in 1979.

He did house jobs in Hastings and John Radcliffe Infirmary. As a Medical Research Council training fellow in Oxford, he developed a highly influential mathematical model of glucose and insulin kinetics. He held consultant posts in Bradford (1999-2001) and at Salford Royal Hospital (2001-11).

He was an enthusiastic teacher and gifted polymath, with rich cultural interests in the arts and natural history.

During the AIDS crisis he gave his time generously, undertaking substantial voluntary work, especially for OXAIDS. Involvement in the Jewish community was of central importance to him. He was a member of Leeds Sinai, Jackson’s Row, and the Manchester Liberal Jewish Community.

Prostate cancer diagnosed in 2011 forced him to retire prematurely, which was a great loss to Salford Royal. He leaves his devoted partner, David.

Emeritus Professor of Slavonic Studies

Most of Simon Franklin’s research has been concerned with the history and culture of early Russia and of Russia in the Early Modern period. In particular, he has focussed on aspects of the cultural significances of the written word across a broad spectrum of genres and forms and technologies: handwritten and printed, graffiti, inscribed objects, ephemera.

Apart from teaching and research, he has served in numerous university and college roles, including periods as Head of the School of Arts and Humanities, as Senior Tutor of Clare College, and as a Trustee of the European University in St Petersburg, and of the Pushkin House Trust in London. In 2007 he was awarded the Lomonosov Gold Medal of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and he is a Fellow of the British Academy.

Grumbold, Robert, Master mason
Persona

Robert Grumbold was the Master mason in charge of designing and building the North (hall) range of Old Court. He was related to Thomas Grumbold who was the Master mason who designed and built Clare bridge and who is mentioned in the College building accounts CCAD/7/1/1/1. There is a memorial plaque to Robert Grumbold in the graveyard of St. Boltoph's church.
