Hugh Carey lived in Cambridge as a child and knew Mansfield Forbes (1889-1936, Clare 1909) as "Uncle Manny". His father, Gordon V Carey (Caius 1908), was a close friend of Forbes. As part of his research for the biography of Forbes, Hugh Carey collected material from friends and colleagues of Forbes during the late 1970s and early 1980s but died in 1984 after passing proofs of his book for press.
Elected Master of Clare College in 1993 and retired as Master in 2003.

James Plumptree was an undergraduate at Queens' College, Cambridge in 1788 or 1789 and then moved to Clare in 1790, ordained in 1794 and elected as Fellow at Clare in same year; curate of Hinxton, Essex from 1897 and then Vicar of Great Gransden from 1812; married Elizabeth Robinson in 1815. Died on 23 January 1832, soon after his sixtieth birthday.

John Reynolds Wardale (1859-1931) was admitted to Clare in 1878, became a Fellow in 1882, Junior Tutor in 1894, sole Tutor in 1915, remained as Lecturer until 1923. Compiled the "Notes" from his research into the College records for "Clare College" (1899) as part of the series of University of Cambridge College histories, for "Clare College Letters and Documents" as well as for general interest.
