Atkinson was admitted to Clare, 1838. Later Master of Clare, 1856-1915 (the longest Mastership in the College's history), during which he presided over the change from 'Clare Hall' to 'Clare College. He also served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge.
Edward Atkinson is buried at Mill Road Cemetery in Cambridge alongside his wife - the monument was restored in Nov 2016 following a donation from the College.
