WWI - served as Captain in the Royal Garrison Artillery and as Assistant Proof and Experimental Officer at Woolwich Arsenal. His services were recognised with the award of an MBE.

He returned to Cambridge after the War to direct studies in mathematics and to lecture for the Mathematical Tripos.

1929 - 1949 served as Bursar.

William Greaves was born in Rochdale, Lancs and was the son of William, of Gartside Hall, Lancashire.
He was admitted to Clare on 26 January 1719/20.
